Border Loomers is a bilingual community weaving initiative connecting neighbors along the Arizona-Sonora border through free, community-led workshops. We share cultural and artistic traditions, make weaving accessible to everyone, and foster a vibrant bilingual community - strengthening ties across the border and celebrating our shared heritage.
Our Mission & Vision
At its core, Border Loomers exists to make weaving free and accessible to everyone in the borderlands - no matter which side they call home. Founded by Emmanuel Fernando Serrano in 2025, the organization runs hands-on programs like the Youth Off-Loom Weaving Workshops and Little Loomers, which brings permanent loom stations into schools and libraries so kids grow up with shared equipment and shared responsibility. We're currently working toward independent 501(c)(3) status, and looking ahead, El Telar Itinerante will carry that same mission on wheels - bringing looms directly to rural and border communities that don't yet have access to a workshop space of their own.
We see the Arizona-Sonora borderlands - Bisbee, Douglas, both Nacos, and Agua Prieta - as a single community, not two sides of a line. That belief takes shape in a two-space model we're building toward: a free, guild-style workshop in Naco, Sonora, where equipment is shared rather than owned, and a gallery in Bisbee where fine art sales help keep the whole project self-sustaining. bord•er•line, our flagship curated exhibition, is the proof of concept - showing that a binational, resource-sharing approach to fiber arts can actually work, and work for the long haul.
Where We Are Headed
Border Loomers is on its way to becoming a fully independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In the meantime, we're building our programs, our team, and our community - one workshop at a time.
Meet the Founder
Emmanuel Fernando Serrano
Executive Director & Founder
Emmanuel Fernando Serrano founded Border Loomers in 2025 with a simple belief: the US-Mexico border isn't a line dividing two communities, it's a shared home for one. Growing up moving between both sides, he saw the borderlands not as a boundary but as common ground - and he built Border Loomers to prove it, bringing free bilingual weaving workshops to Bisbee, Douglas, Naco AZ, Naco Sonora, and Agua Prieta Sonora alike.
What started with a handful of frame looms has grown into a full vision: a workshop headquarters in Naco, Sonora where anyone can access shared equipment, and a gallery in Bisbee that sells fine art to keep the whole project running. Fernando leads as Founder and Executive Director, working alongside a binational team and board to build something that belongs to the border itself - not to one side of it.
